‘The Road to Guantanamo’ on Channel 4 this Thursday at 2100

Channel 4, 9 March at 2100, award-winning film, ‘The Road to Guantanamo’.

Michael Winterbottom\’s latest film tells the incredible story of the so-called ‘Tipton Three’, Asif Iqbal, Shafiq Rasul and Ruhel Ahmed who ended up being brutally tortured in the world\’s most notorious maximum security jail. Their case, which made international headlines, ended with them being released and found innocent of all charges, and now Britain\’s most versatile director shows exactly how it all happened.

The powerful effect this film is having can be gauged from the manner in which the ‘Tipton Three’ and the actors who played them in the film were treated at Luton airport on returning from the Berlin Film Festival. All were detained and questioned under the Terrorism Act, refused access to lawyers, verbally abused and mocked. The actors were asked their viewpoints on the Iraq war, whether they intended to make more films on Muslim struggles around the world and whether they would mind being regularly contacted by intelligence officers in the future.

The Road to Guantanamo is not an easy film to watch, but it is one of the most important films of the year and one which deserves as wide an audience as possible.
