UK Event: ‘Islamic Perspectives on Engaging as a Minority in Western Politics’, Monday 3rd March, London

Date: 3rd March 2003
Time: 6 p.m. (for 6.30 p.m.)
Venue: Islamic Centre of England, 140 Maida Vale, London, W9.

IHRC presents a round table discussion between Imam Mohammad Al-Asi, Imam Achmad Cassiem and Dr. Muhammad Al-Massari. The panel will be open to question by the audience for a full and frank discussion of views.

Current events have seen Muslims in minority situations apparently confronted by the twin dilemmas of either staying silent in the face of oppression or participating in mainstream political activity. Our three panel members will address Islamic issues dealing with Muslim minority political activity.

Imam Mohammad Al-Asi is the elected Imam of the Islamic Centre in Washington DC, a senior member of the Institute of Contemporary Islamic Thought, and advisor to the Islamic Human Rights Commission, and regularly writes for Crescent Newspaper.

Imam Achmad Cassiem is the National Chairperson of the Islamic Unity Convention (South Africa). At aged 15 he joined the armed struggle against the oppressive apartheid regime in South Africa and at the age of 17 he was one of the youngest people to be imprisoned on Robben Island. Imam Achmad Cassiem is also an advisor to the Islamic Human Rights Commission.

Dr. Muhammad Al-Massari is a well-known scholar and Saudi dissident. Now based in the UK, he runs the CDLR and is an advisor to the Islamic Human Rights Commission.
