International Day of Commemoration and Dignity of the Victims of the Crime of Genocide and of the Prevention of this Crime

This month is an opportunity to raise awareness of the Genocide Convention and how we all can prevent the crime of genocide. Today, 9th December marks the International Day of Commemoration and Dignity of the Victims of the Crime of Genocide and of the Prevention of this Crime.

The Genocide Convention establishes a duty on Member States to take measures to protect their populations from genocide, ethnic cleansing and crimes against humanity, as well as to punish these crimes.

Islamic Human Rights Commission would like to remind all our readers that we need to stand up together to end genocide and to spare no efforts in preventing ongoing atrocity crimes.

Lesson Plans and School Resources

We have compiled a selection of resources to highlight the worst atrocity committed in Europe since the Second World War, the genocide in Srebrenica.  Lesson plans and resources like this one, have been prepared to educate younger generations on the importance of remembering victims of genocide to not repeat the past. We hope that the lesson plans and activities will be of interest and relevance to teachers and students.

Poetry Competition for 2021

The GMD competition challenges your students to write a poem and reflect the theme of protecting humanity from genocide. The competition is open to anyone in the UK aged 11 to 18 at the time of entering.  The date for final submissions to the 2021 competition is 18th December 2020. Full details of the competition can be found here.

The winner of first prize gets the chance to visit Bosnia on an educational trip to join one of the commemorative ceremonies and other relevant activities. Due to the unpredictable nature of the pandemic the trip to Bosnia is provisionally postponed to July 2022.

In addition to our individual prizes, IHRC will be offering a prize to the two schools which have entered the most entries.

We hope to continue this project with your support and feedback. Please do not hesitate to contact us.
