Briefing now available on-line: The Civil Contingencies Bill

IHRC’s latest briefing looks at the further curtailment of civil liberties by the British government’s proposed legislation. The briefing looks at the bill’s unprecedented powers; its main features; when its powers would be used; the problems with its definition of an ’emergency’; and analogous outcomes to that of the US Patriot Act.

IHRC Chairman Massoud Shadjareh said:

“The introduction of this bill, despite some amendments as a result of consultation, augurs ill for the health of the nation as a free country and society. The creeping incursions on our civil liberties are terrifying and we need to challenge them now before it is too late.”
