In Search of Ali ibn Abi Talib’s Codex: History and Traditions of the Earliest Copy of the Qur’an – Seyfeddin Kara

The history of the text of the Qur’an has been a longstanding subject of interest within the field of Islamic Studies, but the debate has so far been focused on the Sunni traditions about the codices of Caliphs Abu Bakr and ‘Uthman b. ‘Affan. Little to no attention has been given to the traditions on ‘Ali b. Abi Talib’s collection of the Qur’an.

This book examines both Shi’i and Sunni traditions on the issue, aiming to date them back to the earliest possible date and, if possible, verify their authenticity. To achieve this, the traditions are examined using Harald Motzki’s isnad-cum-matn method, which is recognised as an efficient tool in dating the early Islamic traditions and involves analysis of both matn (text) and isnad (chain of trans-mission) with an emphasis on finding a correlation between the two.

The Noble Qur’an: A New Rendering of Its Meaning in English – Abdalhaqq Bewley, Aisha Abdurrahman Bewley

The result of over twenty-five years of detailed study of the Qur’anic text, the Bewley translation has the advantage of high quality, naturally fluent English, along with the benefit of access to the traditional understanding of the text. Hajj Abdalhaqq and Aisha Bewley are not only scholars but they have been also practising Muslims as well as prolific translators for almost four decades.

A Believer’s Guide to Fasting – Shaykh ‘Abd-Allah Siraj al-Din & Shaykh Hisham Burhani

Two treatises on the rulings, merits and secrets of fasting. The first is by Shaykh ‘Abd-Allah Siraj al-Din from Allepo wherein the author examines the wisdom behind fasting: its obligations, etiquettes, requirements, benefits and virtues. It includes an interesting and lengthy discussion on the Night of Divine Decree (commonly referred to as the Night of Power), exploring its derivation, significance and virtues.

The second is by a contempory scholar from Damascus, Shaykh Hisham Burhani, and primarily deals with the legal aspects of fasting: its rules and regulations in accordance with the Hanafi school of Islamic Jurisprudence. They serve as a means of providing the believer with indispensable knowledge of this pillar so that he may maximise in reaping the reward and the benefit from the blessed month of Ramadan.

The War on the Uyghurs: China’s Campaign Against Xinjiang’s Muslims – Sean R. Roberts

The first account of one of the world’s most pressing humanitarian catastrophes. This eye-opening book reveals how China has used the US-led Global War on Terror as cover for its increasingly brutal suppression of the Uyghur / Uighur people. China’s actions, it argues, have emboldened states around the globe to persecute ethnic minorities and severely repress domestic opposition in the name of combatting terrorism.

Within weeks of the September 11 attacks on New York and Washington, the Chinese government announced that it faced a serious terrorist threat from its largely Muslim Uyghur ethnic minority. Nearly two decades later, of the 11 million Uyghurs living in China today, more than 1 million have been detained in so-called re-education camps, victims of what has become the largest program of mass incarceration and surveillance in the world. Drawing on extensive interviews with Uyghurs in Xinjiang, as well as refugee communities and exiles, Sean Roberts tells a story that is not just about state policies, but about Uyghur responses to these devastating government programs. Providing a lucid and far-reaching analysis of China’s cultural genocide, The War on the Uyghurs allows the voices of those caught up in the human tragedy to be heard for the first time.

Donate to our causes

The Prophet Muhammed (ﷺ) was the most generous of all the people, and he used to reach the peak in generosity in the month of Ramadan. We know from our scriptures that rewards for acts of obedience performed in the month are greater than in other months. Divine mercy, blessings, and rewards are at their peak during this time. Invest in your hereafter by drawing closer to Allah and supporting the oppressed now.

We have a number of causes and appeals that you can donate towards. We support the victims of conflicts such as the Rohingya, Nigeria, Palestinians and Yemenis. We also accept zakat and sadaqa as well as donations to Muslim prisoners in the UK. For more information, click here.

The Latest Long View Issue is out!

In this issue, Denijal Jegić takes a cold, hard look at the positioning of the European Union’s position on Palestine.  Linda Hyökki argues for a Muslim language and praxis that challenges prevailing discourse around minorities and cultural rights. Nargess Moballeghi looks at the furore after the overturn of Roe v. Wade by the US Supreme Court last year.

The fallout from this case saw people from all walks of life, worldview, faith and geography argue over which side was right.

Omar Hijazi looks at the self-imposed limitations that even those arguing for a transformative Islamic world-view place on themselves.  In response to a piece from a well-known blog, attacking Iran’s Islamic revolution, Hijazi argues that this type of critique is simply a mirror of secular westernised polemic given an ‘Islamic’ legitimacy using a sectarianised lens.
