Saturday 24th October Workshop 1
Citizen Coconut: a collaborative Zine workshop envisioning the Coconutistan Nation
The workshop will begin to look at the coconut trial and solidarity action
In mid-September 2024, heavily pregnant Marieha Hussain was acquitted on a racially aggravated public order offence for her placard at a pro-Palestine protest on 11th November 2023, which depicted then-Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Home Secretary Suella Braverman as coconuts. The investigating team for the prosecution were not able to find expert opinions to support their argument that the term ‘coconut’ was indeed a racial slur, and instead, were met with “quite a lengthy response” by Kehinde Andrews stating that the term could not constitute racism. Despite this, the case still went to trial, raising questions on issues surrounding the policing of black/brown political thought, the convolution of the application of anti-discrimination law to silence free speech, and the lack of protections for pregnant women in legal settings
Together we will imagine the fiction nation of Coconutistan – drawing on the fictional nation of Aspergistan in Hamja Ahsan book Shy Radicals.
What would be the Nation Anthem of the Coconutistan?
What would be the national ceremonies, army and constiution?
What would be the rights of asylum, border control?
Saturday 14th November

Colonial Crime cross-solidarity Famine Zine (Bengal 1943, Ireland 1847)

Whilst there exist over 100 public famine memorials for the Irish famine, there exist zero memorials for 31 colonial famines? We will look at art from Zainul Abedin depicting the Bengal famines.
