2. Summary

Sunday 30th June 2013 will mark 60 days from when five Palestinian political prisoners with Jordanian citizenship went on hunger strike in Israeli jails. They have been physically and psychologically tortured to pressure them to end their hunger strike.

The families of the prisoners are asking for their immediate release and in the very least for the prisoners to be transferred to Jordan to serve their sentence as per the Wadi Araba normalisation agreement 1994.

3. Background

The five hunger strikers: Abdullah Al-Barghothi, Hamzah Al-Dabbas, Muneer Merei, Alaa Hammad and Mohammad Al-Rimawi are facing deteriorating health conditions and are continually denied much needed medical attention. Some of the prisoners have lost their ability to walk and are confined to wheel chairs.

Mohammad Al-Rimawi, who suffers a heart condition, is being denied medication by the Israeli Prison Service until he agrees to stop his hunger strike.  Prisoners’ cells have been raided and other violent and intimidatory methods have been employed to pressure the prisoners to end their non-violent protest.

On 26 June 2013, Israeli guards attacked Abdullah Al-Barghouti in the hospital, dragged him from his hospital bed to the concrete floor and kicked him in the face, causing bleeding. In response to these brutalities, demonstrations have been held in Jordan calling for the release of these political prisoners or at least their transfer to a Jordanian prison where their families can contact them.  Families of the prisoners and Jordanian human rights activists are calling on individuals conscientious of human rights and civil liberties to internationalise their call for the immediate release of the hunger strikers.

His Excellency Mazen Kemal Homoud, Ambassador of Jordan to London,

Re: Torture of Jordanian citizens held in Israeli prisons

I am writing to you in regards to the five Palestinian political prisoners with Jordanian citizenship who are currently imprisoned in Israeli jails and are facing deteriorating health conditions and are being denied much needed medical attention.  They are Abdullah Al-Barghothi, Hamzah Al-Dabbas, Muneer Merei, Alaa Hammad and Mohammad Al-Rimawi.

Some of these prisoners have lost their ability to walk and are confined to wheel chairs. On 26 June 2013, Israeli guards attacked Abdullah Al-Barghouti in the hospital, dragged him from his hospital bed to the concrete floor and kicked him in the face, causing bleeding.I urge you to take the necessary action to ensure the immediate and unconditional release of Abdullah Al-Barghothi, Hamzah Al-Dabbas, Muneer Merei, Alaa Hammad and Mohammad Al-Rimawi.
