NEW EXTENDED DEADLINE: 12 March 2016

IHRC has launched its annual poetry competition this year leading up to Genocide Memorial Day. For further details and the journey of a competition winner please view the video ‘Visiting the Genocide’.

The competition is held every year as part of GMD, and there are an array of prizes to be won for winning entries. Contestants are encouraged to reflect the theme of ‘genocidal weapons of mass destruction‘ in their poem. Poems should be respectful of the topic.

First Prize: Paid trip to Bosnia with an accompanying adult. Includes flights, accommodation and meals. There they will be able to visit the sites of where some of the atrocities took place.

Second prize: £50 IHRC Bookshop voucher.

Third prize: £25 IHRC Bookshop Voucher.

All winners will be awarded a certificate of achievement.

Competition rules

IHRC recommends all entrants read the rules carefully before entering:

  • The competition is open to anyone aged 11 to 18 at the time of entering.
  • The poem needs to be emailed to gmd@ihrc.org.
  • Participants must be residents in the United Kingdom
  • No IHRC employees or immediate relatives of IHRC employees can enter the competition.
  • The poem must not exceed 400 words (excluding the title of the poem).
  • All poems must include a title.
  • All poems submitted must be typed in clear English, and every page should bear the name of the entrant.
  • There can only be one entry per person.
  • There can only be one author per poem.
  • All entries will be considered anonymously by the judges.
  • Entries will not be returned, so please keep a copy.
  • Under no circumstances can alterations be made to poems once entered.
  • All submissions can be used by IHRC as and when required.
  • Only poems written in English will be considered in the competition.
  • All entries will receive a confirmation e-mail, if you have not received a confirmation on receipt of your application please email and enquire about your entry at gmd@ihrc.org.

The competition organisers reserve the right to change the judging panel without notice and not to award prizes if, in the judges’ opinion, such an action is justified.

The judges’ decision is final and neither the judges nor IHRC staff will enter into any correspondence.
