Please find below three age appropriate lesson plans looking at how xenophobia works within society, and ways of disrupting racism and hatred.  These lesson plans all use Armin Greder’s renowned book, ‘The Island‘*.

Lesson Plans 

Ages 16+ The Island’ by Armin Greder

Suitable for History, Citizenship, Civics, English Literature.

Learning objectives: Critically analyse how the book explores fear of the other, xenophobia; make links between the story and real-world issues (migration, racism, Islamophobia, exclusion); develop empathy and strategies to challenge prejudice in society; reflect on the role of individual responsibility vs. collective action and the impact of the ‘bystander effect.’
