Press Release: Anti-Terror Statistics Highlight Criminalization of the Innocent

The Islamic Human Rights Commission (IHRC) is deeply concerned about the anti-terror statistics that were recently released by the Home Office. The statistics reveal that out of the 1228 people arrested since September 2001, under “intelligence-lead” anti-terror operations, only 19 percent were charged. IHRC also notes that anti-terror raids resulted in two shootings of innocent individuals, one of which was fatal.

In response, Chair of IHRC, Massoud Shadjareh stated:

“These statistics are a cause of grave concern for the intelligence operations, as they have shattered the lives of many innocent people. We are very concerned about the criminalization of these innocent people who are now left with no realistic opportunities to clear their names and vindicate themselves. We call on the government, the authorities, and the press, to move away from criminalizing innocent people in the name of combating terrorism.”
