Press Release: IHRC calls upon Police to take action against Iranian Terrorist Group

IHRC is urgently calling on the Metropolitan Police to stop a meeting in support of a proscribed terrorist group taking place tomorrow Thursday 28 October in the House of Commons.

The meeting, organised by \’Together Against Fundamentalism\’, will feature Jalal Ganjei, chairman of the Religious Tolerance Committee of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI). NCRI is a front for the Iranian terrorist organisation Mojahedin-E-Khalq (MKO) which has been banned in the UK, US and the EU. NCRI itself is banned by the US and EU.

IHRC notes that under the Terrorism Act 2000, support for a proscribed organisation or arranging a meeting to be addressed by a member or professed member of a proscribed organisation is an offence punishable by up to 10 years imprisonment. Should the meeting go ahead as scheduled, IHRC calls upon the police to arrest those who may have committed an offence under the Act.

IHRC further notes that the meeting is due to take place at the same time that the government is attempting to pass its new Terror Bill into law which would allow even non-violent groups to be proscribed.

IHRC Chair Massoud Shadjareh stated:

\”Failure of the police to act in this situation will reinforce the perception within the Islamic community that policing is not done on the basis of law and the protection of society but rather in furtherance of a higher political agenda.\”
