We are delighted to announce that the keynote address will be given by Dr Umar Faruq Abd-Allah, a prominent scholar and Shaykh from the US.

His keynote address has been titled, “Father versus Patriarch: The Socio-Political Ramifications of Parenthood.” His address will explore the theological and spiritual dimensions of fatherhood as embodied in the Islamic non-gender specific concept of God and the model of the Prophet Muhammad (s). It will also focus on the nature of the nurturing father and its social-psychological and political implications especially in terms of helping to thwart right-wing political ideologies and propensities.

A unique event which brings together practitioners, community groups, individuals and academics from the UK and abroad to explore the nature of fatherhood in contemporary Muslim Culture, the conference will provide a rare opportunity to participate in debate, listen to key speakers on fatherhood and Islam – and to explore how to engage British Muslim fathers in our communities, and support them as they raise and educate their children as citizens of a rapidly changing world.

An-Nisa Society has worked together with Fathers Direct for two years to discover what British Muslim dads think and feel about bringing up children in Britain today; all participants will receive free copies of our beautifully illustrated and informative new practitioner guide on working with Muslim dads.
