Campaign update: IHRC prisoner of faith released

Campaigners will be pleased to hear that prisoner of faith Dr Hassan Turabi, leader of the Popular Congress Party in Sudan has been freed after two years under house arrest.

Dr Hassan Turabi leader of the banned Popular Congress Party in Sudan was released yesterday 13th October, by presidential decree. President Omar Hassan El- Bashir summoned leading members of the PCP and Issued two decrees ordering the release of all political prisoners including eight other members of the PCP and removing all restrictions on political activities for all political parties. In addition to lifting the ban on party activities and the PCP party newspaper, the party headquarters and offices were vacated by security forces throughout Sudan for the first time since February 2001.

Both the Northern and Southern Sudanese have welcomed the move as a positive sign towards greater political freedom and human rights in the fractured country.

Dr Turabi has stated that he believes his release was due to ‘internal and international pressure.’

IHRC would like to congratulate all its campaigners for taking part in the campaign to free Dr Hassan Turabi.
