Launch of the report: ‘The Radicalisation Awareness Network  – Policy network in search of an evidence base or covert propaganda platform?’

Hosted by Clare Daly MEP (GUE/NGL) in collaboration with IHRC & Spinwatch

Download the report here.
The virtual launch of the report took place on 31st May at 16.00 CEST.  Watch the video here or read a short report below.

The event was moderated by Caterina Aiena from IHRC, with participation from Clare Daly MEP and IHRC’s Advocacy Head, Abed Choudhury responding to the Spinwatch report which was presented by its author Professor David Miller.

The report meticulously outlines the connections between intelligence agencies and what is supposed to be a non-aligned initiative tackling ‘extremis’ and ‘radicalisation’.  Not only are the links exposed comprehensively in this report, but also the conflicts of interest of RAN personnel according to the European Union institutions’ own guidance.

These find raise serious questions about the role of RAN, and by dint of their failure to act, European institutions in:

  • fostering an environment of suspicion and hatred against Muslims in particular but dissenting political voices in general;
  • collapsing the safeguards that prevent unaccountable bodies like intelligence agencies from impacting the everyday lives of citizens and the work of elected governments;
  • shrinking civil society and political space for Muslims, and other political activists and organisations;
  • undermining democratic institutions and societies.

Many more issues are and concerns are uncovered by the report which can be found here on the Powerbase site.  The report was written for and published by Spinwatch with funding from the Open Society Foundations.

This event was co-organised by IHRC and Spinwatch.
